Dutee Chand wins bronze at Asian Athletics Championships

Odisha’s star sprinter Dutee Chand, who is embroiled in a gender case, won the bronze medal in the 100m event at the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar on Friday.

Dutee clocked 11.52 seconds to finish in third, behind Kazakh duo Viktoriya Zyabkina (11.39 seconds) and Olga Safronova (11.45 seconds). Dutee had qualified for the final round after finishing second in the semi-finals heat with a time of 11.56 seconds.

“I was expecting to perform better than this. The rain affected my performance, but I am happy to have bagged the bronze. I thank my well-wishers for supporting me,” Dutee said.

Another Odisha athlete Amiya Kumar Mallick was disqualified after a false start in men’s 100m sprint. India bagged four gold medals on day two of the Asian Athletics Championships.

CM Naveen Patnaik was at the Kalinga Stadium to support the athletes on Friday.
