Guide maps for Bhubaneswar soon

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to install designer direction maps at 20 important locations to help people find their way around the city.

State Bank of India (SBI) will partner with the civic body, in the venture and will have the advertisement rights. “In consultation with BMC officials, we have planned to name the maps as ‘you are here’. The map boards will be of seven feet high,” said chief manager of SBI (main branch, Bhubaneswar) Bibhudatta Mohanty.

He said that presently photographs of statues in temples are being clicked. These will be given to a sculptor, who will make the replicas, he added.

Bhubaneswar being a city of temples, statues and images highlighting its culture and heritage will be installed along with the maps.

“The maps having designs of monuments will provide information about important offices, hospitals, movie halls, parks, recreation centres, bus stops, residential areas and colonies, within a two km radius. This map will be different from the broad direction marks already put up on city roads, which indicate major roads and locations only,” said BMC commissioner Sanjib Mishra.

“Ideally, direction maps should be put up at all the bus stops. This should be clearly visible to the commuters with a red mark on it indicating the place where one is stationed, so that one can know other directions from there,” said urban planer Piyush Rout.

For small information, tourists have to ask either people or taxi or auto rickshaw drivers and they are likely to be misled as the taxi drivers don’t have correct information always, said Odisha Tourism Development Corporation ( OTDC) general manager M R Patnaik.

“Direction maps will help visitors get information within a limited area,” he said. (Source – The Times of India)
