The list comprised 10,147 students from general category while 3,057 belonged to scheduled caste and 2,031 scheduled tribe communities. While 7,074 students were picked from the science stream, 2,035 and 6,126 students were chosen from the commerce and arts streams respectively.

One leading college of each district has been declared as nodal college for distribution of free laptops.

Higher education minister Badrinarayan Patra said, “The government would spend Rs 300 crore to give laptops for free to meritorious students so as to enable them become technically savvy.”

Odisha would join states like Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in distributing free laptops to educated youngsters, in what is apparently a ruling BJD move to woo the youth, who comprise 42% of the state’s 4.19 crore population, ahead of the 2014 elections.

Naveen would launch the scheme at BJB College, Bhubaneswar on August 15.
