Odisha government seeks Rs 4242 crore

Odisha government sought Rs 4,242.41 crore from the Centre towards repair and restoration work following the devastation caused by Cyclone Phailin and the subsequent flood.

The state government has given a memorandum showing a loss of Rs 4,242.41 crore due to the cyclone and the floods. The damage includes houses, power sector, roads, buildings of educational institutions, drinking water sources etc, officials said.

Ganjam district alone has suffered a loss to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore. The state sought an assistance of Rs 1,048.14 crore to meet losses in the energy sector, Rs 718.67 to take up relief work and Rs 599.88 crore to carry out the repair of gram panchayat roads.

The rest of the amount is being to take up the repair of school and college buildings, roads and bridges and to ensure water supply apart from input subsidy for crop loss.

“The damages are substantial. I have visted a limited areas in cyclone-hit Ganjam district. We will examine the memorandum given by the state government before releasing assistance to the state. I have suggested to the Odisha chief secretary to take advantage of different central government schemes for long term rehabilitation of the affected people,” Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami said after meeting Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Chief Secretary J K Mohapatra during the review meeting urged him to ensure early release of interim assistance of Rs 1,000 crore to facilitate the ongoing relief and restoration works in affected areas.

Goswami praised the efforts of the Odisha state government for its preparedness to face the challenge posed by the Phailin.
