PM assures Orissa Congress delegation to respond positively Judicial panel report on mining scam
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday assured a Congress delegation from Odisha that the Centre would respond positively on any report that judicial commission on mining may give about reports of massive irregularities and corruption in the state.

Bari MLA Debashish Nayak had written a letter to the chief minister stating that in Keonjhar, mining was being controlled by a private mining company in collusion with a local politician. “A local BJD leader had also colluded with them and all of them looted the minerals. However, the state government remained silent on the issue. Even the work of Tisco had been affected for three months,” Nayak said, adding that the company enjoyed the patronage of a BJD leader.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued notice to the Orissa government seeking a report within four weeks on allegations that schools have been converted into barracks to take on villagers opposing land acquisition.Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report, the NHRC asked Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Orissa to submit their reports.

Vedanta was denied permission to mine in the Niyamgiri Hills, home of the Dongria Kondh tribe who have been vigorously protesting against the mine. Now the issue has returned to India’s Supreme Court. At tomorrow’s AGM the company will be told by protesters inside and outside the meeting to respect the stance of both the government and the Dongria Kondh and to give up on the Niyamgiri mine.

The suspicion about the involvement of powerful politicians arose because the arrested by Jharkhand Police last week, were in possession of official documents related to the mining lease. While interrogating the two arrested men — former president of Jajpur unit of BJD’s youth wing Chandan Rout and a self-styled journalist Biswanath Satpathy — the cops found the involvement of two more persons, including a political heavyweight.

The BDA has been asked to prepare a Detailed Project Report by inviting tenders from interested firms.
