Rourkela to become Corporation soon

A few days after announcing to convert Sambalpur Municipality into corporation, the Odisha Government on Tuesday has decided to transform Rourkela Municipality to Corporation too.

According to sources, a formal notification to this effect would soon be published.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced this after meeting with a delegation from Rourkela. During the meeting Urban Development Minister Debi Prasad Mishra, Chief Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra, Rourkela MLA Sharada Prasad Nayak and others were presented.

The ruling BJD , is desperate to strengthen its grip over western Odisha where the Congress and the BJP have a strong support base.

According to the census report of 2011 the population of Rourkela Industrial Township is 2,73,217 and Rourkela Town is 2,79,753 and the urban metropolitan area is 6.5 lakhs (approx). Then railway station of Rourkela was within the revenue village of Mahulpali.

The city is surrounded by a range of hills and encircled by rivers. One of the largest steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is situated here. It also has one of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT Rourkela) of the country.

The picturesque and modern twin towns of Rourkela and Fertilizer Township as well as their developed periphery are located in areas that were once covered by dense forests. Rourkela city came into prominence in the year 1955. India’s first public sector steel plant facility was established here with the help of German businesses Krupp and Demag.
