Odisha bandh called by Congress disrupts normal life in state

Today normal life was hit in Odisha due to a 12-hour state-wide dawn-to-dusk bandh call given by the Congress Party.

The bandh is being called by the Congress in protest against the state government’s failure to take action against those responsible for irregularities and violation of tradition during the Brahma Parivartan of the Lords in Puri on June 17.

However, all essential services like health services in hospitals and Nabakelabara works were exempted from the Bandh.

Congress leaders Ranjeev Biswal, Sura Routray and Bhakta Das arrested while picketing at AG square in Bhubaneswar. Train and bus services were affected as the members of the main opposition force of the State held picketing at various places.

Congress activists staged rail roko in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Khordha Road, Angul, Sambalpur, Brahmapur, Bhadrak, Jaleswar, Bhadrak and Rayagada in the morning and staged road blockades at various places in these places as a mark of protest.

The bandh also evoked total response in Puri as the Congress workers and leaders blocked the road at Atharanala and picketed at the railway station. All schools, colleges, educational institutions, business establishments and banks remained close.

Vehicular traffic came to a grinding halt while all business and trading establishments remained closed in in most parts of the state. Besides, all banks, government and private organisations remained close.

“We demand judicial probe into the delay in Brahma Parivartan, resignation of the Law minister and the chief minister responsible for such unfortunate incident,” said Congress leader Chiranjibi Biswal.

Expecting the possible attack by the protesters, strict security arrangement has been made at Naveen Nivas, the chief minister’s residence, residences of Law Minister Arun Sahoo, Food & supply Minister Sanjay Dasbarma, Chief Administrator of SJTA Suresh Mohapatra and BJD office.
