6-year-old Odisha girl saves sister from crocodile in Kendrapara

A 6-year-old girl displayed exemplary courage by saving her elder sister from crocodile in Kendrapara district of Odisha.

According to report, the brave girl Mamata, daughter of Abhay Dalai of Bankuala village under Rajnagar block in the district, had gone to a pond adjoining to their house along with sister Ashanti (7) at around 4 pm on Tuesday.

The 5-ft long wild crocodile suddenly attacked Ashanti while both sisters were taking bath. Displaying her great presence of mind, Mamata pulled her sister out from water and the crocodile slipped into the pond.

Ashanti sustained injuries on her right hand in the crocodile attack and she was rushed to a hospital. Reaching the spot, the forest officer has provided financial aid to the kin of the injured. Admiration and praise poured in for Mamata for showing courage in little age to save her elder sister.

“The show of courage by little girl deeply moved me after I went through the media reports. I cut short the official schedule and met both the girls. I talked to Mamata, whose heroic act has drawn statewide appreciation”, said Kendrapara Collector, Muralidhar Mallick.

Mamata’s feat is a fit case that merits consideration for national bravery award. The administration will write to the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) for national bravery award recognition to the Kendrapara girl that is given away to 25 children every year in the age group of 6-18 years for exceptional bravery, Collector Mallick said.
