Odisha starts helpline number 181 for distressed women

Odisha government started a 24×7 toll-free helpline number 181 for distressed women on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Wednesday.

The helpline will facilitate quick response of various services including lodging police complaint to provide medical, legal and counselling to women victims.

The helpline will be functional 24×7 and backed by a team of professionals who are trained to route the calls to the emergency services concerned. A woman in distress can dial the toll-free number from any part of Odisha to get immediate assistance.

Addressing a function on International Women’s Day, Naveen Patnaik said while women of Odisha have contributed significantly and carved a niche for themselves in an array of sectors, there is a lot to be done for their holistic empowerment. The essential scale to judge the progress of a society is the development of its women.

The Centre had launched the 181 helpline number in 2013 after the brutal gang-rape of Nirbhaya in December 2012 and asked all states to start the helpline. Besides, 1091 helpline number by the police and 10920 helpline number by the State Commission for Women are also there.
