Odisha street vendors get smarter with Paytm digital wallets

Roadside eateries in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar get smarter with Paytm digital wallets to deal with the lower denomination currency crunch post demonetization of higher notes.

The street vendors have put up boards displaying option of paying bills through Paytm wallet, a mobile commerce platform for bill payment.

The mouth-watering dahi bara and gupchup stalls in Bhubaneswar are offering mobile payment solution to their customers in case they run out of money to foot the bill.

“As pld Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes have been banned, people are facing problems. We are giving them options to pay bills through mobile phones,” Shibasankar Patra, a gupchup seller said.

While auto rickshaws, taxis, vegetable sellers and other retailers have been reluctant to accept and transact these banned currencies, the local roadside eateries have come up with this novel solution to deal with the crisis situation.

“After the higher denominations have been banned, we are facing difficulties. Paytm is a better option to pay the bills,” Pintu Mandal, a dahi bara seller said.

Various reports and industry experts believe payment volume and transaction sizes via digital platform is expected to grow manifold in the coming months. Paytm said its platform saw an overwhelming 435 percent increase in overall traffic within hours of the Prime Minister’s announcement.
