Rabana Podi in Odisha – Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela, Balasore

Marking an end to this year’s Durga Puja, Rabana Podi was celebrated in Odisha with great fanfare on Tuesday evening to observe the victory of good over evil. Huge effigies of Ravan, the demon king of Ramayan epic were set afire with colourful fireworks across the State.

According to sources, many committees in the capital city Bhubaneswar including Saheed Nagar, Jharpada, Baramunda had organised Rabana Podi event.

The 1000 year old city and the old capital of the State, Cuttack also celebrated the Rabana Podi with great fanfare. A 60-feet high effigy of Ravan was set afire at Baliyatra ground on bank of river Mahanadi. The event was accompanied by number of cultural programme. Heavy crowd was witnessed everywhere.

The steel city Rourkela also celebrated Vijaya Dashami by organising Ravan podi. Dussehra puja committee had organised Ravan podi function with colourful fireworks which was attended by Rourkela MLA Dillip Ray.

Likewise, the Rabana Podi was also celebrated at Deogarh, district Collector’s office ground in Jagatsinghpur, Madhuban ground in Baripada and Jaleswar in Balasore district.

Though the Odisha State Pollution Control Board had requested all puja committees to stop the ritual in order to control air pollution, most of the committees went ahead with the celebrations.

Rabana Podi is celebrated on the occasion of Bijaya Dasami, which is considered the day of the victory of goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura after a nine-night, ten-day long battle. It is also believed that lord Ram killed demon king Ravan on the day after offering his prayers to Goddess Durga.
