Sudarshan Patnaik sand sculpture on Indian cinema

Sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik has been invited by the Indian Embassy in Paris to attend the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

He will create sculptures on Indian cinema at Cannes beach during the festival which will be held from May 14 to 25.

Patnaik, who left for Cannes on Sunday, said he was excited about the project. “It is a rare opportunity to exhibit my talent during a prestigious international film festival. My student Bulu Mohanty will assist me,” he said.

Air India and Union tourism ministry have arranged their trip.

Asked if he has anything-specific idea in mind, he said: “My works would revolve around the legends of Indian cinema and the greatest films that India has produced. It would be something that will appropriately represent Indian cinema. I might even create some sculptures on Hollywood celebrities and films.”

Sudarshan Patnaik has participated in more than 50 international sand sculpture championships and festivals across the world and won many prizes.

He was recently awarded Padma Shri.
