Odisha boy critical after tree branch pierces through neck

A minor boy was admitted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack in critical condition after a thick and long tree branch got lodged in his neck.

The tree branch accidentally fell while he was plucking fruit from a black plum tree at Dangar Diha village near Ghatagaon in this district Thursday. The victim was identified as Bishnu Mahakud aged about 12 years old.

Bishnu was rushed to Ghatagaon hospital immediately but the doctors referred him to Keonjhar DHH. But the doctors there could not remove the branch from Mahakud’s body following threat to life.

He was brought to SCB Medical College and Hospital where a team of doctors conducted a major surgery and removed the branch. However, his condition remains to be critical, as per sources.

The boy would be kept under observation in the ICU for a couple of days. “We will try to control the infection, which is likely to be occurred due to the injury in other organs including heart and lungs of the body. He will be discharged only after examining his health conditions,” said Dr Manoj Kumar Patnaik.
