The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration on Monday decided to provide accident cover of Rs 5 lakh to all the devotees visiting the temple town Puri this July for Rath Yatra.
The insurance coverage of pilgrims increased to Rs 5 lakh from the existing Rs 1 lakh. The scheme will be available between July 17 and July 30 for any accidental deaths within the municipality jurisdiction in Puri.
According to the scheme, any devotee passing away in a stampede or any such accident or is rendered permanently disabled under the jurisdiction of Puri municipality during this period would receive Rs 5 lakh each.
Earlier the scheme was available only inside the Jagannath Temple, Gundicha Temple and Grand Road for only Rath Yatra and Bahuda days. This time the administration has expanded the coverage area and timing.
“The insurance money covers all types of unnatural deaths like stampede, house collapse, road accidents and drowning within the Puri municipality area. It will remain valid from the eve of Rath Yatra till Niladri Bije on July 30,” SJTA’s chief administrator Suresh Mohapatra said.
Besides, the SJTA has insured pilgrims inside the shrine throughout the year. SJTA said it took the welfare measures in view of the possible rush of lakhs of pilgrims from across the globe during the nine-day car festival.
