Capital I: first Independent feature film of Odisha to release in Oct

The first Independent feature film of Odisha, Capital I, after a long wait, eventually is ready to hit the theatres.

When the makers launched trailer of the film, there were a lot of negative talks regarding this film. Some groups blocked the film due to it’s “objectionable content”.

Then it began its festival journey. It was one of the six films in competition at South Asian Alternative Film Festival Paris, it was one of the seven Indian films at 20th International Film Festival of Kerala (the only Odia film in the list), it was in competition at 8th Bengaluru International Film Festival, and quite a few other festivals in India and abroad. It was the first Indian film to be acquired by the Italian company ‘The Open Reel’, and was also broadcast through the Polish TV channel ‘Filmbox Arthouse’.

“I say – watch it! Watch it with your eyes open! Watch it with your minds open! Let the cinema loving minority of Odisha decide the fate of the first independent feature film of this state, and not the bureaucrats or “eminent” musicians,” said Amartya Bhattacharyya, director of Capital I.

Now it will release in INOX Bhubaneswar, and hopefully it will reach a lot of theatres across cities in India. You can buy tickets from this site www.1018mb.com.

The story line goes like this – a young girl Piyali, pursuing MSc Psychology joins her old Physics professor to research about a mysterious figure called Capital I, who in the process, eventually starts transforming them psychologically. The girl, who wasn’t satisfied with her submissive boyfriend, gets into a state of deep trance and starts hallucinating. She conjures up a fictious lesbian partner. The professor, also into a trance, couldn’t break away, and the film suggestively ventures into the inevitable.

Apart from wonderful cinematography and brilliant background score by Kisaloy Roy, Capital I offers a psychodrama that leaves you confused in an unexciting manner.

However, as an independent feature film in Odia, Capital I is a much better film than any commercial Odia flick. If the director could come up with this, with non-actors, limited resources and shoe string budget, one can only imagine the wonder the filmmaker can do when he has the best of it all. Though the content is uncovincing, the intent of making a film like “Capital I” is incredible.
