New drunk driving fine Rs 10000, driving without helmets fine Rs 2000

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016 which provides for very hefty penalties in case of traffic violations.

Under the new provisions approved by the Cabinet, fines for drunk driving goes up to Rs 10,000 from Rs 2,000 and driving without license goes up ten times from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000.

A fine of Rs 1,000-4,000 will be imposed for over-speeding . As per the bill, driving without insurance will be punishable with Rs 2,000 fine and/or three-month imprisonment, while driving without helmets will attract Rs 2,000 fine and 3-month suspension of licence.

Also, in cases of juvenile offenders , the guardian/owner will be deemed guilty and the vehicle registration will be cancelled. For seat belt violation, new proposed penalty is Rs 1,000, up from Rs 100.

“The important provisions include increase in compensation for hit-and-run cases from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh. It also provides for compensation up to Rs 10 lakh in road accidents fatalities,” an official release said.

The proposals are based on the recommendations of transport ministers from 18 states.

Indian roads witness 400 deaths every day. India sees nearly five lakh road accidents a year in which 1.5 lakh people die and another 3 lakh get crippled.
