All districts to have cyber cells from April 1

From April 1, Cyber cells will start functioning in all 34 police districts of Odisha. Currently, the state’s only cyber police station functions under the Crime Branch in Cuttack.

Each police station at the district headquarters has been equipped with computer and internet facility and the police personnel at the district level have been provided with adequate training to track cyber crimes.

Many police stations in the state refuse to lodge complaints related to cyber crimes and ask victims to come to Cuttack. Most victims do not do so and the cases go unreported. But after the new initiative the police station cannot turn away the victims.

Awareness programmes and training sessions related to cyber crime are organised every year at the Crime Branch and many inspectors and sub-inspectors are given training. There is absolutely no shortage of trained hands at the district-level cyber cells.

The Cyber police station at Cuttack was established in 2006 but became fully functional in 2007. Atleast three cyber cases were lodged in 2007 and 2008, while one case each was lodged in 2009, 2010 and 2011. However, in 2012 the cyber police station registered 10 cases related to credit card fraud, pornography and online banking fraud.

“We receive over 30 complaints relating to fake Facebook account, hacking of e-mails and SMS and online fraud on an average every month but we cannot take up all the cases due to shortage of manpower. We register only the important cases,” said an official of the cyber police station.

ADG (Crime Branch) B K Sharma said in coming year special budgetary allocation would be made for these cyber cells so that they can be equipped with the latest technology and equipment. If policemen at cyber police stations at the district level face any problem, then experts at Cuttack cyber police station will help them. (Source – The Times of India)
