Press Club of Odisha formed

Odisha media fraternity launched “Press Club of Odisha” on the presence of media house Owners, news editors and senior journalists at Mayfair Hotel in Bhubaenswar on Tuesday.

The long wait for a press club in the State has ended. The club will not only bring together the journalist fraternity in Orissa but also help fight for their cause and protect their interest in a more organised and purposeful manner.

At a meeting which was attended by the heads of all major news dailies circulating in the State and TV news channels, the presidium of the club was chalked out.

Editor of “Sambad” Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Editor of “Dharitri” Tathagata Satpathy, Managing Director of OTV Jagi Mangat Panda and Dipak Malavya of Lok Sevak Mandal were unanimously nominated as members of the presidium.

The meeting was attended by Samahit Bal (Executive Editor, Pragativadi), Ranjib Biswal (Managing Editor, Samaya), Gopal Mohapatra (Editor of the Samaj), Madhusudan Mohanty (Managing Director, Odisha Bhaskar), Jayashish Ray (Sambad Kalika), Rabindra Kumar Panda (Anupam Bharat), Baishnab PR Mohanty (Prameya), BK Tripathy of “Dinalipi”, Prafulla Das of “The Hindu” and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Patnaik said the press club was a necessity in Odisha which was probably the only State not to have one till now. This move will bring journalists to a common platform and work for their welfare, he said.

Satpathy highlighted the past attacks on mediapersons and said the club will provide a platform to fight for them.

Samahit Bal said the membership of the club will have to reach 300 in next three months.

A committee headed by BK Tripathy was formed with Madhusudan Mohanty as its convener. The committee will study the structural functioning and formation of similar cubs of the country and take necessary steps for formation and registration of club within a month.

Besides, the meeting also decided to form another body to be headed by Samahit Bal as President, Ranjib Biswal as Secretary and Madhusudan Mohanty as Treasurer who were authorized to take necessary steps in this regard.
