Odisha’s Jauna Murmu wins gold in National Open Athletics Championships

Bringing laurels to Odisha, ace Odia athlete Jauna Murmu today bagged gold medal in the women’s 400-meter hurdles event at the 57th National Open Athletics Championships in Chennai.

Murmu, representing ONGC in the meet, clinched the top prize by clocking a timing of 58.25 seconds. While Arpitha M of Railways finished at the second spot, Veerpal Kumar of Punjab grabbed the third position with timings of 59.97 seconds and 1.06 minutes, respectively.

It may be recalled here that Murmu had entered the final of women’s 400-meter hurdles at the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships held at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar earlier this year and later found a place in the 25-member Indian athletics contingent for World Athletics Championships in London.

Murmu, who is representing Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), had bagged bronze medal in the women 400m race yesterday by clocking 54.50 seconds.

Another athlete from Odisha Purnima Hembram had won the gold in women’s 100m hurdles with a timing of 13.89 seconds at the 57th National Open Athletics Championships yesterday. She is representing Indian Railways.
