Odia cuisines to be available in trains through e-catering system

Railways minister Suresh Prabhu on Monday announced that popular Odia cuisines would be available in trains through e-catering system.

Prabhu also announced that the Railways will give a market linkage to tribal artifacts and handlooms through Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). Tribals will get an online platform for marketing of their products, he said.

“Even women self-help groups (SHGs), who are making traditional Odia cuisines and other food materials, can get opportunity to sale their products in Railways. We will try to help them in marketing their product,” he added.

Prabhu made the announcement at a ceremony held to launch several railway projects, including two escalators and a lift, to boost passenger amenities at Bhubaneswar railway station.

Prabhu’s e-market promise came following a request by Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who was also present at the ceremony. “A number of self-help groups prepare indigenous food products such as poda pitha, arisa pitha and handicraft products. The members of these groups will benefit if their products are sold through the IRCTC’s e-portal,” Pradhan had said.
