Odia weightlifter Saraswati Rout wins gold in South Asian Games

Odia weightlifter Saraswati Rout won a gold medal in women’s 58 kg category in the 12th South Asian Games 2016 in Guwahati on Sunday.

Odisha weightlifter brought the first gold of the day, and fourth for India, with a total lift of 187 kg (80 kg in snatch + 107 kg clean and jerk).

The silver medal was grabbed by Fullapati Chakma of Bangladesh, with a total lift of 144 kg (63+81). Sri Lanka’s Umeira Mohideen won the bronze in the category with a total lift of 142 kg (61+81).

Sambo Lapung then gave India another gold in men’s 69 kg event in a close contest. After trailing by 5kg in snatch, the Indian lifted five more kilograms than his Sri Lanka rival M Disanayake in clean and jerk, leaving the two lifters tied on a total lift of 281kg.

India stood heads and shoulders above competition to top the medals tally with a count of 42, which included 27 gold, 12 silver and 3 bronze medals. The second spot continued to be held by Sri Lanka with a total of 37 medals (8 gold, 17 silver, 12 bronze).

The wrestlers added four gold and a silver, while the weightlifters snared three gold medals.
