American actress flaunts Odisha-born designer’s dress in Emmy Awards

Odisha-born designer Bibhu Mohapatra once again impressed fashionistas as American actress Ilana Rose Glazer donned a hand pleated chiffon gown designed by him at the Emmy Awards 2018.

This is not the first time that the ace designer from Rourkela has made headlines. In association with Odia weavers, he had in 2015 designed a six yard long onion pink silk sari with a cream border and silk thread embroideries on it, which was gifted to Michelle Obama, wife of the then US President Barack Obama.

New York is, of course, not just where Bibhu Mohapatra has spent most of his adult life, but also the city that’s shaped his identity. Having moved from Rourkela in Odisha to America to study economics, New York was where he switched careers to his long-nurtured passion — textiles and fashion.

In 2009, after stints at the studios of Halston and J Mendel, Mohapatra began showing his ready-to-wear collections at New York Fashion Week. His evening wear has since been worn by the likes of Michelle Obama and Lupita Nyong’o. But building a career and running it independently involves stressful days and nights.

Ilana Rose Glazer is an American comedian, writer, and actress. She is best known for co-creating and co-starring in the Comedy Central series Broad City, which is based on the web series of the same name. Glazer starred in the 2013 independent feature film, How to Follow Strangers. The film won top prize at the Lower East Side Film Festival. She appears in the 2015 film The Night Before. Glazer starred alongside Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon in the 2017 comedy Rough Night.
