Jawan assaulted by stone pelters in Kashmir is from Odisha

The CRPF jawan, whose restraint while being abused and kicked by Kashmiri youth won many hearts, hails from Khetarajpur in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, said he would serve the country till his last breath.

The assault on CRPF Jawan Vicky Viswakarma and five of his colleagues including a Commander and a Havildar by a group of stone-pelters had triggered large scale condemnation after a video went viral early this month. Watch the Odia jawan’s interview video here.

But 26-year-old Vicky maintains that it was self-restraint on the part of the CRPF personnel of 50th BN of CRPF stationed at Lalgarh in West Medinipur of West Bengal that had prevented the situation from flaring up.

Vicky, who has come to his home at Poddar Colony in Khetrajpur for marriage of his sister on May 21, was deployed in Kashmir on election duty. Recalling the horror, Vicky said the six CRPF personnel were deployed to provide security at booth no-65 in Badgam during by-election to Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on April 9.

After polling ended, they were heading towards their vehicles which they had sought to take them back to their camp. The street was deserted and all the shops along the road were closed. After walking around 600 metres, the team saw a mob coming towards them.

Instead of panicking, they walked silently when the mob attacked them. They pelted stones before kicking and assaulting them. The mob told them to raise slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” and “Go back Indian Go back”. Despite the humiliation and assault, the securitymen maintained self-restraint and managed to inform the camp.
