Odisha woman files ‘wife swapping’ case against husband

Lopamudra Mishra (36), wife of Odisha industrialist Sabyasachi Mishra on Tuesday alleged that her husband had tried to force her to agree to ‘wife swapping’ a few days after their wedding in 2006. Besides her husband, she has alleged that her father-in-law and industrialist Trailokya Mishra, and mother-in-law have been subjecting her to physical and mental torture.

“While we had gone on our honeymoon trip to Port Blair, I saw him talking to a foreigner. I didn’t give much importance to it. Moments later, he came to me and asked to go for wife swapping which I strongly objected to. Then he started beating me ruthlessly. I had to return from the trip on the third day of the scheduled 10-day trip,” the complainant said.

She also alleged that her in-laws had supported her husband. “He has been torturing me for a decade and my in-laws stayed silent. He never gives me money to spend and even ignores his son. Whenever I oppose him, he assaults me,” said Lopamudra, an arts graduate.

According to reports, the woman had approached an NGO seeking intervention. When the attempts to sort out the issue failed, she moved the Mahila police on May 10.

“A case under Section 498 A and 506 of IPC has been registered with Mahila police. The Investigating Officer (IO) is probing the matter and the supervising officer has also been told to expedite the matter,” Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said.
