Ages glide by, yet the classic’s charm remains unchanged. Probably that’s why the black-and-white movies of the 60s keep compelling film lovers to relish the magic time and again.

The enigmatic Odia film, Prabhat Mukherjee’s Jeeban Sathi, will be screened at Jayadev Bhavan on May 2. A group of film lovers in the city is screening the movie to provide the audience with an opportunity to watch the classic.

Jeeban Sathi is a critically acclaimed film and one of the biggest hits of the early 1960s. The cast includes actor Sarat Pujari and dancer Minati Mishra, both of whom had just begun their career at that time. However, the fine-tuning between the two and their sensible acting hardly left any room for criticism.

The film, that deals with the theme of reincarnation, won the silver medal in the best film category at the most prestigious national awards of those times — the President’s Award. Regarded as the first Odia film to have been shot outside the state, Jeeban Sathi takes one through some beautiful locales in Shimla in some of its sequences. The music was scored by renowned music director Balakrushna Das.

Unfortunately, the musical records could not reach the listeners because of a strike at the recording company. The screening will take the film lovers through such trivia and give them a chance to meet some of the crew at the event.

“Apart from actor Sarat Pujari, we have invited the producer of Jeeban Sathi, Srinibas Paikray, two of the lyricists of the film and Niranjan Satpathy to grace the occasion. It is an entertaining film and I am sure the younger generation will also find it enjoyable,” said Surya Deo, one of the organisers of the screening.

Apart from the screening, the evening will also get to see the DVD launch of another Odia classic Mala Janha, an effort by film enthusiast Mahendra Mishra. (Source – The Telegraph, Author – CHANDRIMA MAITRA)
