Odisha’s Purnima Hembram won the gold medal in the pentathlon event at the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on Monday.
Hembram scored a total of 4062 points to finish at the top with Thailand’s Winatho Wrtaf Wassana (3915 points) and Sunisa Khotseemueang (3093 points) finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Purnima had earlier brought laurels to the state by winning bronze medal in women’s heptathlon at the Asian Athletics Championships held this year at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Tejinder Pal Singh Toor and Sanjivani Jadhav won a silver medal each in men’s shot put and women’s 3000m respectivley while Neena Varakil took a bronze in women’s long jump.
With the four medals won yesterday, India is now at 11th spot in the medals tally, which is led by hosts Turkmenistan (26 gold, 21 silver, 12 bronze).
