Rain Songs in Oriya Movies
The first rain song in Odia cinema was introduced in “Sri Sri Mahalaxmi Puja” (1959) in the song “Akasare kete bijuli chamake”. It took another three years for Sharada Nayak to shoot another monsoon number — “Barida re tu ja na” – in “Laxmi”(1962). In Prafulla Sengupta’s 1967 film “Arundhati”, the director used two rain songs — “Mayuri go tuma akashe mu dine” and “Aji mu srabani, luhara harini”. Nine years later when Prasanta Nanda shot “Sesha Srabana”, it featured hit rain songs such as “Hi re hi garaje megha ghum ghum,” “Megha barasila tupuru tupuru,” “Mu nadi tu je sagara,” and “Tu megha mu je bijuli”. Subsequently, Nanda’s “Balidan” also had a song celebrating the rains called “Nei ja re megha mote”. Even till today, this song is very popular among the youngsters.
