The 18th annual Guru Kelucharan Awards for 2012 will be held between September 15 and 19. Srijan, Guru Kelucharan’s dance institute is organizing the awards. The award began as a single day affair in 1995, has blossomed into a five-day awards celebration now.
Two stalwarts of art will be awarded the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award this year for their contribution to their respective fields. Birabara Sahoo is a legendary dance guru of the ancient Gotipua dance, while Ramachandra Pratihari, an inspiration to many in the field of theatre.
“We try to ensure there’s a blend of renowned and budding artistes. The idea is to get an overall view of Odisha’s cultural canvas. So while there are classical performances, we also get to see how the new generation artistes are performing. We take a lot of care in planning each evening’s show so that we have the right mix of talent,” said Raikanta Mohapatra, director of Srijan.
15 September – Performances by eminent dancer-choreographer Madhavi Mudgal and ghazal exponent Hariharan.
16 September – Performances by Kuchipudi dancer Manju Barggavee and a jugalbandi by percussionist Kaaraikkudi R Mani and tabla player Anindo Chatterjee.
17 September – Bharatanatyam performance by Vaijayantimala Bali and a drama called “Bahana”.
18 September – Kathak dance performance by Chitresh Das and a flute recital by Paras Nath and Pankaj Nath.
19 September – Neo-classical dance by artistes of Srjan.
