Rath Yatra is the annual chariot festival of Lord Jagannath. It is a huge Hindu festival held at Puri in the state of Orissa, India during the months of June or July.Rath Yatra festival brings Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to Gundicha mata’s temple via aunt’s home i.e. Mausi Maa Temple which is near Balagandi Chhaka in Puri.
Rath Yatra 2012 Date falls on 21st June. Three richly decorated chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balarama, and their sister Subhadra pulled by devotees towards the Gundicha Temple which is situated at a distance of 2 km from Jagannath temple. This is the only day when devotees who are not allowed in the temple premises such as non-Hindus and foreigners, can get their glimpse of the deities. During Rath Yatra festival, devotees from all over the World go to Puri with a desire to pull Lord Jagannath’s chariot with ropes. They consider this a holy deed and risk their lives in the huge crowd.

Besides Puri, Rath Yatra also takes place at London, Melbourne, Mumbai, Iskcon Belgaum, Sivaji Park, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana, USA, Canada, Bangalore, Baripada & other places around the world. Rath Yatra festival is celebrated on on the second (dwitiya) day of shukla pakshya (waxing cycle of moon) of Ashadh Maas (3rd month in Lunar Calendar). The huge, colourfully decorated chariots, are drawn by devotees on the bada danda to the Gundicha Temple. On their way back from the Gundicha Temple, the three deities stop for a while near the Mausi Maa Temple and have an offering of the Poda Pitha, which is a special type of pancake supposed to be the Lord’s favourite. After a stay for seven days, the deities return to their abode.
