Chandan Yatra Festival 2012 in Puri (Orissa)
Akshay Tritiya day is celebrated as Chandan Yatra Festival in Puri, Orissa. It is also observed by Krishna devotees at Iskcon, Mayapur & Vrindavan. Chandan Yatra is a festival of the Lord Jagannath. From this day, construction of the chariots for the annual Rath Yatra festival is begun.
Chandan Yatra 2012 date is April 24. Chandan Yatra Festival is celebrated for 42 days in Puri. On the first 21 days, the main deities of the Jagannath temple as well as five Shivalingas are taken in a procession from the Singhadwara of the Jagannath temple at Puri to the Narendra Pokhari. After various rituals, the deities are placed on grandly decorated boats. The last 21 days include rituals held inside the temple itself.
