Odisha scraps Matric, +2 toppers list
After deciding to abolish the top 100 list in matriculation results, the government is now mulling the elimination of the top 20 list in various streams of Plus Two as well. A final decision on the issue has been deferred till April 15.
The state government’s decision to do away with top 100 merit list in the annual HSC examination has evoked mixed reaction from teachers, students, parents and educationists. The Board of Secondary Education ( BSE) that conducts the HSC examination said it will help in reducing stress and unhealthy competition among students.
The State Government’s decision to scrap ranking system in matriculation examination has been opposed by a senior leader of the ruling party.
District president of BJD and Bhogarai MLA Ananta Das has written letters to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and School and Mass Education Minister Rabi Narayan Nanda urging them not to scrap the age-old ranking system in the HSC examination.
Every year the board receives thousands of application from students seeking rechecking and re-addition of their answer sheets as they feel they have missed out a position in the toppers’ list, board officials said.
Recently, School and Mass Education Secretary Usha Padhee had said that the HSC result sheet would only contain the roll numbers of the students who have cleared the test but will not include the Top-100 names. This was done in order to reduce the tension among students and arrest the competitive culture.
However, the MLA said publication of the Top-100 list encouraged bright students to compete among themselves to get better grades.
Intellectuals have also urged the Government not to scrap the ranking system in the matriculation exam, but to reintroduce it in an innovative way so that the bright students are encouraged more.
