Maha Shivaratri is a very holy festival in India. It is celebrated in a big way with thousands of devotees at famous holy shrines. Maha Shivaratri 2012 Date is 20th February (Monday) according to Kohinoor Calendar in Orissa.
Shivaratri is celebrated on the fourteenth of the lunar month Phalguna. The three essential ways to perform Puja are fasting during the whole Tithi and holding a vigil and worshipping the Linga during the night. This fasting is named as “Jagar Osha” in Odisha.
There is some difference of opinions in respect to the day on which this festival is observed. According to some authorities, it is held on the fourteenth of the dark half of Magha and according to others on the fourteenth of that of Phalguna. Thus, main point is worshipping the god (lord Shiva) whole-heartedly throughtout the day and night.
