Solar Mobile Chargers for Kendrapada villages
Lighting a Billion Lives
The Centre had signed an agreement with Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) two years ago to provide Solar Photo Voltaic Based Mobile Phone Charging Facilities in 5,000 villages.
Now the Centre has provided 80 solar mobile charging facilities to 15,000 people living in 20 seaside villages of Kendrapada district. A local woman has been trained to take care of the daily activities at the charging station.
Union ministry for communications and information technology implemented the project in collaboration with TERI. The facilities are given to the villagers under “lighting a billion lives project” of the Centre.
“The project is not just about alternate energy, but also about empowering the underpowered through solar power,” said Biraja Pati, president of Nature’s Club, a organization that is training villagers to operate the solar mobile charging stations.
