SELCO Solar to train young entrepreneurs
Selco Solar, a Bangalore-based social enterprise, would soon set up an incubation centre in Odisha to train young entrepreneurs in solar energy, said its founder and champion of renewable energy Harish Hande.
The company has started conducting introductory workshops to select interested youths in various districts of the state, who are keen to work in rural areas.
“The 2011 census data quotes percentage of households in Odisha without access to electricity at 57 per cent. Access to reliable energy can provide them an opportunity of better livelihood and quality of life,” Managing Director of SELCO Harish Hande told reporters.
Stating that access to reliable energy can create employment opportunities for the youth, Hande said SELCO is organising seven introductory workshops in Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Kandhamal, Gajapati and Mayurbhanj districts for addressing the energy needs of the poor.
“The state government should withdraw 4% Value Added Tax (VAT) from renewable energy devices and spares to promote solar energy in Odisha, which has huge potential in this field,” said the Magsaysay awardee on Thursday.
The company will conduct workshops in districts like Nuapada, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Kandhamal, Gajapati and Mayurbhanj.
“All these are socially, financially and environmentally sustainable business models. We wish to empower the local community needs of Odisha through local entrepreneurs,” Hande said.
SELCO is a social enterprise established in 1995, provides sustainable energy solutions and services to under-served households and businesses.
