Prafulla Kar to receive Padma Shri award
Eminent Odia singer, lyricist and music director, Prafulla Kar will be felicitated with the prestigious Padma Shri award – the fourth highest civilian honour.
Born in 1939 into a family of musicians, Praffula Kar showed early promise as a singer at home in Puri, Odisha – the abode of Lord Jagannath.
For more than four decades, Sri Kar has enthralled his fans in Odisha and abroad with his distinctive singing, compositions and lyrics.
Praffula Kar has composed music for more than 70 Odia films as well as 4 Bengali films. The Govt of Odisha has honoured Prafulla Kar with Best Music Director award on eight occasions. Out of which six were given on consecutive years, a record achievement even at the National level.
According to an official release, this year the President of India approved conferment of Padma Awards to 104 persons. The list comprised of 9 Padma Vibhushan, 20 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri awardees.
These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/April every year.
