A carnivorous plant garden was opened at the Nandankanan Zoological Park on the outskirts of the Odisha capital Bhubaneswar, the first of its kind in the country.

Sources said the carnivorous plant garden will be ready fully soon and it will also have a state-of-the art temperature-controlled green house for better growth. The garden will also have adequate display area and signage to describe the details of the plants such as places of origin and availability.

In the first phase, four varieties of plants of different species was developed across 200-sqft area. The park authorities, however, will keep adding to the collection in future.

Sources said most of the plants were procured from a private agency from Punjab. The carnivorous plants trap insects and digest them to get nutrients.

Meanwhile, Nandankanan zoo authorities clarified that they opened it on a experiment basis and only a few collections are there in the garden which will be expanded in future.
