What caused the SUM Hospital fire – Nurses reveal how it all happened

Although there is still no clarity on what caused the fire at the SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha Health Secretary Arti Ahuja on Tuesday ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident.

Fire at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday resulted in the death of at least 19 people.

While officials have said that the cause of the fire had allegedly been due to a short circuit, the real investigation in this massive tragedy has only just begun. Whether it is the sheer negligence of the hospital or a short circuit, the panel formed by Odisha government will look into the matter.

Odisha Health Secretary Arti Ahuja on Tuesday ordered a departmental inquiry into the incident. The investigating panel will consist of the State Director of Medical Education and Training (DMET), Fire Safety Officer and Khurdha Collector. The committee will be questioning authorities inside the hospital to ascertain whether there were any lapses from the hospital’s side.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has also ordered the Revenue Divisional commissioner to inquire into the incident. The Revenue Divisional commissioner has said that the injured are being given best treatment at various hospitals.
